Opatija a high-class tourist destination, is the centre of a riviera with the longest tradition in tourism in Croatia (since 1844.). A favourable geo-transit location, the nearest exit to a warm sea from Central Europe, circa 480 km from Milan, Vienna and Munich, lush vegetation and a pleasant climate are all the most significant reasons for the origins and rapid development of tourism in the late 19th century. Built at the turn of the 19th to 20th century, it has to this day maintained harmony with Cultivated parks, an illuminated seaside promenade (lungomare 12 km), well-maintained beaches and fountains form the back to villas and hotels where up to 6,000 guests can be accommodated. Opatija has always been among the prime tourist centres in Croatia. Its main attractions are its natural beauty and enviable century-old tourist tradition. It also has the advantage of being close to the heart of Europe making it easily accessible all year round as one of the nearest seaside and health resorts.

Taking into account the relative stability of temperatures, high air pressure and constant air currents, the climate of Opatija is both relaxing and bracing. The contrast of sea and mountains (Ucka Nature Park), green parks and blue sea, old buildings and modern comforts, lively entertainment and quiet excursions, make Opatija and its surroundings an attractive tourist destination at any time of the year.

National Geographic puts the entire region of Istria in its list of top ten destinations for 2012.
