  A Natural explanation for Magnetars from a high resolution neutron star

Sazžetak:

Magnetars are neutron stars with the largest  magnetic fields in the
universe, 10^15 gauss - a thousand times higher than pulsars. They have
very different signatures to pulsars. They emit a steady gamma ray flux
of 10^35(6) ergs/sec, have spin down ages of about 10^4 years and can
give giant flares that are the brightest events recorded on earth. The
magnetar giant flare in Dec 2004 put out the same energy in one fifth of
a second equivalent to what the sun puts out in 10,000 years. We a
provide a high resolution equation of state for neutron stars that can
distinguish between pulsars and magnetars and explain these dramatic
features of magnetars. This equation fof state follows from an effective
theory for quark matter whose couplings are set from low energy hadronic
data.
