In short, I study how interactions, disorder (including quasiperiodicity), topology and frustration shape transport and localisation in low-dimensional quantum systems — from many-body localised chains and correlated 1D wires to topological junctions.

Quantum Beats in Many-Body Localized Systems

With B. Faulend and H. Buljan — We show that the slow particle dynamics observed deep in the many-body localised regime comes from many-body quantum beats and is consistent with a stable localised phase.

Research

More specifically, my research concerns the mesoscopic physics of low-dimensional systems, along the following lines:

  • Strongly correlated 1D systems. How the environment and impurities shape transport in quantum wires hosting the Luttinger liquid phase.
  • Correlated disorder and localisation. How quasiperiodic potentials induce exotic localisation properties, in both single-particle and many-body settings. My recent work focuses on out-of-equilibrium dynamics, including the avalanche mechanism, many-body resonances and the stability of many-body localisation in two dimensions.
  • Transport in non-trivial band structures. How quantum effects such as Fabry–Pérot interference survive in 2D devices built from materials with complex (e.g. topological) band structures.
  • Frustrated systems. How frustration gives rise to exotic phases in Mott insulators, such as the long-sought resonant valence bond spin liquid.
