*2D materials: nanofabrication, functionalization and applications*

Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials are characteristic by
their unique properties compared to their bulk counterparts, which makes
them attractive for a wide range of applications, from
(opto)electronics, sensing and biosensing, to catalysis, energy
harvesting and storage. Recent progress in many of these applications
relies particularly on device miniaturization, nanostructuring, and
tailor-ing materials properties and surface chemistry. In this talk, I
will give an overview of my work covering the topics of nanofabrication,
chemical functionalization, and applications of 2D materials, and
highlight the challenges and interrelationships between them. The first
part will be focused on the fabrication of nanopore-based devices that
can be used for single-molecule sensing and other applications (e.g.
osmotic power generation), with the emphasis on the 2D semiconductors as
the main building blocks for field-effect sensing and the nanopore-FET
devices. In the second part, I will show how (elec-tro)chemical surface
modification methods can be used for the selective functionalization of
2D mate-rials and tuning their physicochemical properties. During my
talk, I will also highlight the importance and versatility of advanced
microscopic techniques that can be used for material characterization at
the nanoscale, but also for monitoring (electro)chemical processes, or
even as a nanofabrication tool. Finally, I will shortly present future
research plans and perspectives.
