When we need a very sensitive magnetometer (magneto-gradiometer) we usually take a superconductive quantum interference device (SQUID) as a sensor for magnetic flux and we silently take into account that we have to provide a 4K (sometimes 77K) environment for this sensor. With the recent availability of tunable solid state laser diodes we have got the possibility of revitalization of atomic vapor magnetometers, which became today of comparable measuring power to SQUID magnetometers. Depending on alkaline vapors (Cs, Rb, K) we have to heat the optical cell from a few tens (Cs) to 200 °C (K). A potassium alkaline vapor atomic magnetometer was designed and tested. Our measurements in the dc and rf region will be presented. Results are good and promising and we expect that the new measuring system will work well as a magneto-gradiometer for studies of magnetic properties of new multi-functional materials at high temperatures.
