UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER: CELEBRATING SUCCESS, LEARNING FROM FAILURE

Lisa Cowey B.Sc.Msc.D.Phil. MBA

Team Leader PHARE Croatia Technology Transfer Project
E-mail: lisa.cowey at mzos.hr
The University and City of Oxford UK have a long history of success in technology transfer activities. The University of Oxford Technology Transfer Office, (Isis Innovation), files one patent application a week on average, has assisted in the formation of more than 50 spin-out companies and has negotiated over 800 commercial agreements including more than 350 technology licenses/options. The local region is host to numerous high-tech spinout companies some of whom can trace their origins back to the 1950s. The region has 3 Angel Investment Networks, 2 Science Parks and a network of Incubators.
What was the pathway to such success? And was it always smooth? How and why did the innovation activities evolve as they did? Were policies, processes and regulations planned, or the result of "learning the hard way"? What challenges have faced the University and local Entrepreneurial researchers over the last 50 years along the way to their reward of being voted "Most Entrepreneurial University"?

Come and learn a little about the "behind the scenes" stories that have shaped the face of Oxford as it is today.
