PhD POSITION ON "FLIP-FLOP PROCESSES IN SUPPORTED LIPID MEMBRANES" - University of Graz, Austria

Planar lipid bilayers supported on a solid material offer an attractive route for building biosensors with potential application in healthcare, food and drug industry and environmental science. The characterization of supported lipid bilayers and the study of lipid translocation (flip-flop) processes in model membrane systems is the topic of a project carried by the Surface Science group at the Institute of Physics and the Biophysics group at the Institute of Molecular Biosciences of University of Graz. For this highly interdisciplinary work, which is carried out within the framework of the recently installed Doctoral Academy "Functional Nanostructures in Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences", we offer a PhD position in the area of experimental physics/biophysics. The main topics of the PhD project are the fabrication, the detailed characterization and the study of flip-flop dynamics of metal- or oxide-supported asymmetric lipid bilayers using scanning force microscopy, x-ray
  diffraction and vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy. 

As a potential candidate for this PhD position, you should have a background in experimental physics, physical chemistry or biophysics. Your application should include:
