We will organize a biomembrane conference "International Workshop on Biological Membranes: Tiny Lipids with Grand Functions" in Helsinki, on Aug 19-22, 2018:

The topics of the Conference include a number of timely and exciting themes that are of considerable potential impact and interest, such as:


- lipid-activated protein function

- functional consequences of the lipidome

- membrane dynamics under non-equilibrium and physiological conditions

- novel methodology including cryo-EM, super-resolution microscopy, machine learning, development of multiscale simulation models, etc.


In the Conference, experiments and theory/simulation are given equal weight, which is also reflected in the expertise of the 26 Plenary and Invited Speakers, who are truly outstanding, including e.g. Britta Brugger (Heidelberg), Ron Dror (Stanford), Siewert-Jan Marrink (Groningen), Kai Simons (Dresden), Yifan Cheng (UC San Francisco), Thom Walz (Rockefeller), Unal Coskun (Dresden), Ana-Suncana Smith (Erlangen), Ana-Nicoleta Bondar (Berlin), Andela Saric (UCL London), Elina Ikonen (Helsinki), Christian Eggeling (Oxford & Jena), Ralf Metzler (Potsdam), Walter Nickel (Heidelberg), and many others.


The Conference is supported by several organizations such as CECAM and EBSA, thus we were able to keep the registration fee pretty low , especially for PhD students, and there are grants awarded by EBSA available for young scientists.


Deadline for grant applications: March 31.

Deadline for early registration: April 15.


Helsinki is beautiful and full of life in August.
