COST ACTION MAGNETOFON
3rd Summer School: "Ultrafast magneto-electrics"
5th-8th October @ Samobor, Croatia

 Objective

The School will focus on the emerging research trend of ultrafast magneto-electrics, which combines concepts and know-how from material science, magnetoelectric and multiferroic characterization, ultrafast spectroscopic methods and non-equilibrium condensed matter physics.

The COST Action MAGNETOFON aims at developing ultrafast opto-magneto-electronics, which is an emerging field that combines the ideas and concepts of opto-magnetism and spin transport with photonics for ultrafast low-dissipative manipulation and storage of information.

One of the approaches involved in this research effort relies on magnetoelectric and multiferroic materials, which is the focus of this School. The program covers, but is not limited to: state-of-the-art techniques for the synthesis and characterization of a wide range of magnetoelectric materials (organic, inorganic, powder and crystals), theoretical advances in the description of the multiferroicity and its dynamics, recent experimental advances in optical experiments, ultrafast methods to induce dynamics of the ferroic order parameters.

A meeting of the Management Committee members of MAGNETOFON will take place during the School.
Attendance is free, but registration on the website is necessary. Registrations are closed. We encourage the participants to do it sooner, since the number of participants is limited. In case of a large number of applicants, first come-first served basis applies.

Travel and accommodation costs can be covered by COST, according to the rules presented in the COST documentation. Grant receivers can expect that the daily allowance is enough to cover the local lodging and meals. Participants are expected to use the most economical means of transportation. The grant part for travel will be adapted to the spent amount and will probably cover a large or full part of the travel cost, depending on the number of participants and the budget.

The School provides an opportunity for the participants to present and discuss their work through poster session which will be held in the afternoons. Poster presenters should send their free-form abstracts during registration, or by e-mail until Monday, 13th of September 12:00 CEST. Abstracts of the posters will not be published and will not be known to other participants. Poster dimensions should be 100x80 cm (A0 format).

 Lecturers/Trainers

Lectures will be held by the well-established scientists having rich expertise within the topics of the school:

PDF version of the programme can be downloaded here.

Davide Bossini, Vladimir Srdić, Andrei Kiriliouk and Damir Pajić will moderate the lectures, questions, discussions, and poster sessions.

This programme might be susceptible to the changes so please check after some time again.

 Venue and accomodation

This year the School will take place in the small and beautiful city of Samobor, located only 25 km from the capital of Croatia, Zagreb. All the lectures will be held in the meeting hall of the hotel “Lavica”, situated in the centre of Samobor.

For accommodation, we recommend the hotel “Lavica”, where all the events will take place. This small hotel will be completely reserved for our school. We encourage you to stay in the hotel “Lavica” to be in contact with all the participants and close to the planned events. The hotel has a limited number of single rooms so we encourage participants (particularly the students) to use the double and triple rooms. The approximative prices per person per night (breakfast included) will be: for a single room (double bed) between 35-45 €, for a double room (2 single beds) 25-35€ and for a triple room (3 single beds) 20-30€. Final price will depend on the total number of participants. Recommended arrival is a day before the start of the school. Your affinities regarding the accomodation can be stated in the registration form.

For reservations in hotel “Lavica” please contact us by e-mail after filling the registration form and checking the appropriate tick-marks. If you are coming with the family or friends please specify so that we can organize you in the rooms accordingly. As the number of rooms is limited, the advantage will have the participants who apply first.

Other possible accommodations:

Hotel Livadić, within 2 min walk from the school venue. This one will be appointed for the Management Committee meeting and WorkGroup1 meeting participants and number of free places will depend on people coming.

Hostel Samobor, within 4 min walk from the school venue.

After the research of place and surrounding you might wish to stay a bit longer than school schedule, and in that case participants can contact us in order to make the reservation in the same hotel where the school will be held. Otherwise organizer will assume that participants arrive on Monday and depart on Saturday (or Friday late afternoon) in accordance with the school schedule.

During the school the recommended precautionary measures against the covid pandemic will be respected. Distance between neighbouring seats will be set to 1.5 m (or more, according to local civil defense recommendations). Hand disinfection dispensers and a limited number of face masks will be located at the entrance of the lecture hall.

Food

Hotel Lavica has at your disposal a rustically decorated a lá carte restaurant, with a wide selection of local dishes, and with most of ingredients coming from hotel's own farms. Besides, for the school participants the hotel Lavica will organize lunch for groups. Therefore it is important that you confirm within the registration form if you would like to use it on first day of school, and for the next days we’ll perform on site questionnaire. These lunches will be priced ~10 €. It is important that you write special requirements for food (gluten-free, vegetarian, etc.) in the registration form.

Conference dinner (banquet) will be organized in the same hotel Lavica. After the registration process, the price will be known, expectedly (30±10) €.

Additionally, there are plenty of restaurants in the center of Samobor, as well as somewhere in the near vicinity.

 Travel

Before travelling, please check the latest news and regulations related to the pandemic. Most probably vaccination, test or recovery certificate (EU Digital COVID certificate or similar) will be needed for the entry into the Republic of Croatia. Detailed information about conditions of entry can be found on Ministry of the Interior pages. Fast antigen testing can be done just outside Samobor, and participants needing one for a return journey should refer to the organizers during the School. The School will be held according to the local and national civil protection regulations.

Airport

The Zagreb Airport Franjo Tuđman is located around 20 km from Zagreb. From the airport to the Central bus station in Zagreb there is a bus shuttle.

Airport – Samobor, direct transport

The hotel “Lavica” is willing to offer direct transportation airport - hotel to all interested participants. Those interested in such option please contact organizers by e-mail after specifying this choice in registration form, sending the flight details and time of arrival to the Zagreb Airport Franjo Tuđman. Transport will be organized with bus or minibus and the price will depend on number of people traveling, therefore it is important to know the flight details in order to organize the most efficient direct transportation.

Other possibilities are to use taxi (for which COST does not give refunds if public transportation is available) or to use bus.

Bus

Use a bus from Zagreb Airport to the main bus station in Zagreb, Pleso Prijevoz (duration 30 min, max price 40 HRK, every 30 minutes), and then from Zagreb bus station to Samobor bus station with Samoborček (duration 30 min, max price 40 HRK, every ~ 20 minutes) or with Autoturist Samobor (duration 40 minutes, max price 40 HRK, every ~ 30 minutes).

Train

To the Zagreb main station several international trains arrive from different directions.

Car

Samobor is easily reached by car, using the highway, or other smaller and older roads for those who wish to see more locations during the travel.

Visits and excursions

Within the program of the school, there is an afternoon visit to Zagreb, the capitol of Croatia. There will be possibility to see the Upper Town of Zagreb and some parts of the downtown. Most of the attractions are relatively close to the center, but it is best to consult a sightseeing guide.

Also, for those interested, a short visit to the Department of Physics (official local organizer of the school) at the Faculty of Science of University of Zagreb will be organized. There is possibility to see the novel equipment for investigation in condensed matter physics installed within the infrastructural project CeNIKS co-financed by EU and HR. Department of Chemistry where another one similar infrastructural project CIuK enabled installation of very valuable new equipment is right next to the DoP.
We will organize the bus transportation to Zagreb after the lunch, and back during the evening.
