Emil Babić was born on May 15 1942 at Hvar, Croatia. He graduated in
Experimental Physics at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
of the University of Zagreb (PMF) in 1966. In 1974 he obtained the Ph.D.
degree at the same Faculty. From 1966 to 1970 he was employed at the Institute
of Physics of the University (IFS) in Zagreb, and then at the Experimental
Physics Section of the Physics Department at PMF, first as a junior assistant
professor ("Assistant") (until 1974), then as a senior assistant professor
("Docent") (until 1979), an associate professor (until 1984) and a full
professor (1985). He worked for longer periods (1970/72 and 1987) at the
University of Genova (Italy), at Strasbourg (1980), Nancy (1986) and at
C.S.I.R.O. in Sydney (Australia) (1981). He was a coorganizer of the European
Study Conference at Cavtat in 1977 and the International Workshop on High-Tc
Superconductors (Trieste, 1988). He has been an invited speaker at several
scientific symposia and summer schools. He is a winner (together with B.
Leontić) of a Republic Prize "Ruđer Bošković". He is a member of the board
of editors for the journal Fizika A of the Croatian Physical Society and
also a member of the scientific committee for the Centers of Excellence
of the Central European Initiative and UNESCO. Professor Babić’s field
of work is in the condensed matter physics. His main interest is in the
electromagnetic properties of metallic (especially disordered and amorphous)
and oxide (high-Tc superconductors) systems. He participated
in the realization and procurement of equipment for the laboratories at
IFS, Physics Department at PMF, in Genova, at C.S.I.R.O and Trieste, as
well as in the development of experimental apparatus and procedures. He
has published about 200 scientific papers and 30 papers for non-physicists.
Since 1966, he has directed the student laboratories and conducted exercises
with students pursuing the General Physics courses. Starting in 1976, he
has given lectures in Introductory Physics I and II and, since 1981, the
Basic Physics Course I-IV at PMF. At present he gives the General Physics
I-IV lectures and lectures on the Physics of Disordered Systems. He also
directs the Experimental Physics Seminar. He has participated in the postgraduate
courses at the University of Nancy (1986), Genova (1987) and Zagreb (1997
onwards). Professor Babić has also been the mentor to about 30 students
pursuing their graduation theses and to fourteen doing their B.Sc. and
Ph.D. degree work. He has participated in the publishing of a University
textbook (5-th printing) and a handbook (1988).
