> Galactic Interactions: More Than Meets the Eye
>
> It is known that close galactic fly-bys and interactions give rise to shock waves that disrupt interstellar medium of the galaxies and impact their morphologies. However, these same shocks can also accelerate particles which can result in a population of tidal cosmic rays in the interstellar medium of these interacting systems, in addition to standard galactic cosmic rays accelerated in supernova remnants. In this talk we will focus on the potentially important impact of the presence of additional cosmic-ray population, which has not been considered before but can have far reaching consequences. We will show the impact that nucleosynthesis of tidal cosmic-ray can have on light element abundance. We will also show how extra non-thermal radiation arising from this cosmic-ray population can affect radio brightness of these galaxies and in turn impact the well-established far infrared-radio correlation. Important consequences for our understanding of star-formation history and growth of large-scale structures will be discussed.
