Quantum excitation and time resolved photoelectron spectroscopy in charge density wave insulators

In this talk I will describe the behavior of the simplest (exactly solvable) model of a charge density wave system when it is illuminated by an ultrafast pulse of light. We will focus on two phenomena: 

(1) the quantum excitation problem, which measures the number of electrons excited from the lower to the upper band of the CDW and 

(2) photoemission spectroscopy, which is an alternate way to examine what happens to the gap dynamics during and after the pulse is applied. 

We will relate this exact solution to experiments that have been performed in real materials and with ultracold atoms on optical lattices.
