A zoo of pulsating stars: from single to binaries

Dr. Andrew Tkachenko
Institute of Astronomy, Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium

Asteroseismology is a powerful tool for diagnostic of deep,
otherwise not observable interiors of stars by interpreting
frequencies, amplitudes and phases of their oscillation modes. Though
stellar physics and evolution are well understood in general terms, we
still lack important physical ingredients, even for the stars in the
core-hydrogen burning phase of the evolution. Present "classical"
observational methods allow to deduce common laws of internal stellar
physics with poor relative precision (typically, 20% or worse
depending on the physical quantity and type of star). Beside that, it
is quite often that we have to deal with parametrised description of
some important physical phenomena and assign solar values to the
corresponding parameters, though it is hard to believe they are
appropriate for stars typically several times as massive as the Sun.

In this talk, I would like to focus on both single and binary stars,
on those typically twice as massive as the Sun and those with masses
around 10 solar masses. A particular focus is made on the shortcomings
in the description of various mixing processes (including internal
rotation) taking place near the core of spectral type F pulsating
stars. Concerning binary stars, the application of some powerful
techniques like spectral disentangling and eclipse mapping is discussed.
