The central Laboratory for Microscopy and Microanalysis at the University of Pretoria is operated as an independent laboratory and provides a range of services to students and staff members from all faculties. History and current experience in setting-up and managing such a multi-disciplinary laboratory will be presented. Importance of collaboration, not only of different fields of expertise but also the interaction of different researchers from all around the world is of major importance to the future well-being and development of such a centre of excellence. Open discussion on ways and means of administration, organization and funding of a multi-functional research and training facility is necessary regarding a very difficult economic situation in South Africa and indeed in the whole world.
