      I will discuss the general nature of van der Waals interactions between macroscopic bodies, the historical ramifications of the Lifshitz theory and the general results that one can derive from the Lifshitz theory. I will show that the van der Waals interactions can be either repulsive or attractive, leading to a nice explanation of the puzzle of the slippery nature of ice. I will apply then all these concenpts to the van der Waals interactions between the carbon nanotubes.
