Abstract:
Recently, a "quarkyonic phase" was introduced
as a new aspect of the QCD phase diagram.
Using large-Nc arguments, it has been shown that the
deconfinement temperature T_d is independent of the density.
Increasing the density for temperatures below T_d will lead
to chiral symmetry restoration without deconfinement of quarks.
Hadron production data from heavy-ion collision experiments
seem to support the possible existence of a triple point in
the QCD phase diagram. We discuss attempts of a theoretical
description of the quarkyonic phase and its relevance for
the physics of compact stars and supernovae.
