      Multiferroics for Spintronics

      Multiferroics are a singular class of materials that simultaneously exhibit several ferroic or antiferroic orders, generally with a coupling between them. They can be for instance ferroelectric and magnetic, and offer the possibility to control magnetic properties by an electric field through the magnetoelectric coupling. As such, multiferroics are appealing for spintronics where the manipulation of spin-based properties by purely electrical means and at a low energy cost is essential.

      In this talk I will briefly review the progress made on multiferroics since their renaissance around 2003, with emphasis on the search for room-temperature systems. Then, I will present our results on BiFeO3 thin films, a ferroelectric antiferromagnet with both ordering temperatures beyond 600K. Aside from fundamental studies on the macroscopic and nanoscale physical properties of these films, we have combined them with soft ferromagnetic layers to tentatively achieve electric-field controlled spin-valves. I will discuss our progress in this direction.
