Membrane biophysics has ever been a fascinating field of science, in particular for physicists and physical chemists. I will briefly introduce how the physical state of a membrane may influence its function and illustrate the general principles of small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and its application to membranes and polyelectrolytes. I shall further review some of our past results with a particular emphasis on the role of lipid composition and lipid/peptide interactions. Discussed effects include DNA/surfactant complexes, the role ceramides in membrane heterogeneity and the elastic response of membranes to the insertion of peptides.
