Determination of Dark Processes by means of ensemble and single molecule
measurements

	A major practical problem in studies of large-sized molecules in
condensed matter is that dark processes such as intramolecular
vibrational relaxation (IVR), internal conversion (IC), intersystem
crossing (ISC), isomerization, and solvation occur on a broad time scale
from femtosecond to several milliseconds, and thus very often are
difficult to determine these dark processes. This poses a tremendous
challenge to the experimentalist in establishing the various
contributions of the different steps in the relaxation processes.
     In this talk, we will introduce the observations of specific dark
processes in complex solvated molecules by single molecule
spectroscopy and two-color two-pulse femtosecond pump-dump approach
developed in our laboratory. Several new deactivations of the excited
singlet state of cyanine dyes and LDS dyes are identified.
