PhD and Postdoc Positions at MEMPHYS: Center for Biomembrane Physics, Denmark

PHD POSITION:

A PhD scholarship in computer simulations of ion transport in biology is available at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy (FKF) at SDU starting as soon as possible. The position is associated with the MEMPHYS-Center for Biomembrane Physics. Outstanding candidates comfortable in the Linux computing environment and from a backgrounds in physical chemistry, chemical engineering, physics and similar areas are invited to apply. Knowledge of computer simulations is desired, but can be acquired during the job. The project involves using simulations to investigate the fundamental molecular basis of proton ion transport across biological membranes through proteins. The project is co-advised by Associate Professors Himanshu Khandelia and Ilia Solov’yov.

POSTDOC POSITION

A postdoctoral position in theoretical and computational biophysics of membranes and membrane proteins is available at MEMPHYS: Centre for Biomembrane Physics. The position is available from 1 November 2016 for one year with the possiblity of an extension for another year. Application deadline is 15 September 2016. The candidate should have a good knowledge of statistical mechanics and good English communication skills, and should be comfortable with the Linux programming environment. Experience with computer (molecular dynamics) simulations and with programming in C or C++ is highly beneficial. Candidates with background in physics, physical chemistry and engineering are desirable. The project revolves around implementing molecular simulations of biomembrane-associated phenomena, and development of novel techniques for molecular simulation. The candidate will be jointly supervised by Associate Professors Himanshu Khandelia hkhandel at sdu.dk and Michael Lomholt mlomholt at sdu.dk.

The candidate should have less than 3 years of postdoctoral experience.

For both positions, strong collaboration with experimental groups is expected and the successful candidate will work in a highly collaborative atmosphere at MEMPHYS, working together with theorists and experimental scientists. The successful candidate will have access to large-scale resources on the largest supercomputer in Northern Europe.
