> Systems biology is studying biological systems as a whole. It is a young scientific branch that studies the interactions between the components of organisms (genes, RNA, proteins), or between organisms, and their evolution in time (dynamics). Nonlinear dynamics is a discipline that combines advanced methods from different branches of physics (stability analysis, bifurcation theory, statistical physics, stochastic processes, …) and applies those in different fields of science and technology. The application of non-linear dynamics in systems biology is one of the fastest growing fields in the biological and biomolecular sciences. We are looking for a tenure Track professor with expertise in non-linear dynamics, preferably applied to biological systems. The candidate is expected to:

> -       have the necessary expertise to be able to position him/herself internationally in this field;

> -       have published in journals like (non limitative list) PLOS Comput. Biol., PLOS ONE, J. Theor. Biol., Biophys. J., BMC/Molecular Systems Biology, Phys. Rev. E, PNAS, Nature Communications, Nonlinear dynamics, Comm. in nonlinear sc. & num. simulations, Chaos, …
> 
> -       strengthen the already existing interdisciplinarity between the departements                   of physics, bio-engineering and biology within the Faculty of Sciences and Bioengineering Sciences of the VUB;
> 
> -       have experience in supervising Master theses, doctoral work, project and fundraising;

> -       develop cooperation and synergies between the above mentioned groups at VUB, as well as with other groups, among others with our sister university ULB.

> Education
> 
> On the educational level, the candidate is able to teach - depending on his/her background - general courses (physics, mathematics, data analysis and statistics, statistical physics) in the Bachelor programs of physics, biology and / or bio-engineering. At a Master level, the candidate should be able to teach a course entitled "Non-linear dynamics and chaos” with illustrations including biological systems, preferably for an interdisciplinary group of students from physics, bio-engineering sciences and biology.
