'Deciphering the self-assembly rules for multicellular life: positional information and robustness'

Drs. Robert Endres and Michalis Barkoulas, Department of Life Sciences & Centre for Integrative Systems and Bioinformatics, Imperial College

In this BBSRC-funded PhD position (1 year masters course followed by 3 years of PhD) we will investigate the transition from single-cell to multicellular life, using modelling based on imaging data from social amoeba, cultured stem cells, and worm embryos. We will investigate gastrulation-like events such as symmetry breaking and axial organization, describe dynamics of cell shape in morphospace, and how information is robustly encoded in the structure of cellular aggregates with variable cell fates. A model will aim to derive the principles and rules for such self-assembly processes.

Applicants should submit a CV, covering letter and the names of two academic referees to Dr. Robert Endres (r.endres at imperial.ac.uk). Position is largely restricted to UK students. For eligibility criteria seehttp://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/web/FILES/Guidelines/studentship_eligibility.pdf . Start date: October 2015.
